Woodblock printing is one of the examples of applied arts. The first known examples of woodblock fabric are from the XIV-XV centuries. Woodblock printing technique was also used for decorating textile of clothing which was done in special workshops. The main types of fabric were wool, cotton, silk and linen. Different molds made of pear or oak woods were used to create each image. During the process were used plant, animal and mineral-based materials.
Woodblock print “Rhombus”: The ornament was common in Vaspurakan province. The ornament was mainly embroidered on the clothes of grooms.
Woodblock print “Almond-shaped”: The ornament comes from the traditional apron of Upper Armenia (Bardzr Hayq). Each lower corner of the apron had one pattern which was depicted through golden embroidery threads. The ornament symbolizes rebirth.
Woodblock print “Symbol of the sun”: The ornament is taken from an embroidered pattern on child’s clothing.
