This statuette of a wolf is reproduced from the figurine cast in bronze, which is dated by the 6th – 5th centuries BC and found at the excavations in Ayroum. The wolf and the dog are connected with the underworld. In ancient Armenian beliefs, dogs were ascribed the feature of leading the soul of the deceased to the underworld and reviving the dead. The statuette is certainly of ritual significance and embodies the dog-headed deities called aralez that were connected with the beliefs of death and resurrection in ancient Armenian pantheon.
